Jul 15 2013 Submitted by anonymous: These boxes were given out as complimentary gifts to senior girls as a graduation gift by the local stores that stocked Lane cedar chests and other Lane products. Girls were given a coupon to be redeemed at the store. The idea was that high school graduates might be in need of a "hope chest" soon and that because of our gift, we might return to the store to purchase that or other furniture items. My mom got one in 1934, but it isn't marked Lane. I got mine in Van Nuys, CA. I've never been quite sure what to keep in it, as cedar is not the best spot to store paper items, but one wool scarf might fit.
