The Gurley brothers took over the firm in 1852, began trading as W. & L. E. Gurley, and were soon the largest manufacturer of engineering and surveying instruments in the United States The brass vernier compass, which dates from 1845-1852 is 16" long with 7" diameter face According to the book "Drawing Instruments" by Maya Mambly these sets were made in the late 1700s to the early 1800s with most made around 1780
