The fitted box measures approximately 7 1/2 x 7 1/4 x 6 inches and has a metal plate on the front with "Kern & Co" on it (barely readable)
The device would have been used for precise leveling of a surveying instrument and was an invaluable addition to the surveyor's toolkit
