By 1874, Bausch and Lomb produced their first compound microscope and then -- seemingly overnight in 1900 -- the Bausch & Lomb Company became the leading American manufacturer of microscopes The optical system consisted of a brass body tube with revolving double nose-piece -- a nickel-chrome plated draw tube graduated in single millimeters to 220 mm The tubes were 30mm in diameter and perfectly constructed to permit a large cone of light to pass from the objective Optical "course" adjustments were made by diagonal rack and pinion, moving along a prismatic slide precisely fitted and attached to the body "Fine" adjustment was accomplished by a micrometer-screw that was silvered and graduated with 100 divisions, each representing a motion of the objective of 1/100 mm The revolving slide stage is 100mm (4") in diameter and made of a brass plate fitted with a vulcanite top
