A tray of this type would have been found on a foyer table in any fashionable Victorian home, and was used for receiving visitors’ Calling Cards
Personal calling cards were all the rage in “Society” circles in the late 19th century and many young ladies collected the calling cards of their visitors in scrap books
Cranes became a popular design feature when Chinese and Japanese Export Ware came on the American market with the “Opening” of trade with those 2 countries in the second half of the 19th century
