A MUSEUM QUALITY 17TH CENTURY PILGRIM PERIOD EXAMPLE OF A SQUARE POST AND TURNED SPINDLE "CARVER" TYPE CHAIR ALL IN NATIVE AMERICAN RED ELM AND WHITE OAK, MASSACHUSETTS, Circa 1650-1660, IN AN OLD WASHED DOWN SURFACE WITH TRACES OF A 19TH CENTURY BLUE AND THE ORIGINAL RED PAINT THIS CHAIR IS THE NATURAL PROGRESSION OF THE EARLY SQUARE POSTED PILGRIM CHAIRS FROM PLYMOUTH COUNTY, MA FROM THE 17TH CENTURY American Red Elm is a wood documented in American Pilgrim Chairs, one chair in the collection of Winterthur is made of Red Elm The chair also has the small stature of the Documented 17th Century Square Post Chairs from Cape Cod The turned arms are completely original with only a couple of 18-19th century wrought nails added for support The surface is an old washed down surface with traces of an old 19th century blue and the original red still showing The seat height is a full 15 1/2" which is nearly identical to the measurements of the documented Cape Cod chairs from the 17th century
