EARLY 17TH CENTURY FURNITURE IS BECOMING TOUGHER AND TOUGHER TO GET AN EXTREMELY RARE EARLY PILGRIM PERIOD 17TH CENTURY CARVED FRONT BIBLE BOX OR DESK BOX WITH FANTASTIC CARVED DECORATION AND STILL RETAINING AN OLD GRUNGY SURFACE ENGLISH, CIRCA 1640-1660 IN OAK WITH THE MOST FANTASTIC ORIGINAL CARVED DECORATION ON THE FRONT PANEL THIS GREAT BOX DATES TO THE MIDDLE OF THE 17TH CENTURY ALTHOUGH IT IS ENGLISH IT HAS A SIMPLE CARVING SIMILAR TO THE ESSEX COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS BOXES AND CHESTS FORM THE LATER PART OF THE 17TH CENTURY The top has cracked in a few places (a very common thing) and the present wrought iron snipe hinges date to the 19th century It originally had snipe hinges which were replaced in the 18th century with strap hinges and replaced again in the 19th century with the present snipes
