For at least 500 years - since the 15th century, and probably earlier, the Auvergne has been the most famous Region in France, for lace production
My personal collection contains a number fine textiles and related pieces, including a circa 1680 Louis 14th period knotted Savonnière carpet
a remarkable compagnon’s (master guildsman’s) presentation weaver’s brass tobacco box, circa 1760, with a very local provenance
On a relative scale, this truly exceptional wheel & distaff is late – circa 1875 – but is of truly superior quality – to have it reproduced by a skilled craftsman would cost thousands
