In this case, about 2/3rds of the upper edge is a working edge (as the back 1/3 starts widening to meet the ferrule), and the full length of the lower edge Blade is 17.3 cm long, the ferrule 12 mm long, and the crosshatched ebony handle 8.5 cm long 12 mm maximum handle thickness, 18 mm maximum handle width Blade is 14.5 mm at its widest, blade's back tapers from 4 mm wide near the ferrule to a razor thin tip The instrument was found with 2 other amputation knives in a large chest of 19th century French navy surgical instruments There is a near full length hairline crack in the ebony, seen in several of the photos, especially #6 &11 Joseph-Frédéric-Benoît Charrière (March 19,1803 – April 28,1876) was a Swiss-born French manufacturer of surgical instruments He moved to Paris at age 13, and was apprenticed to a manufacturer of knives
